The Yacht

The only BKI-classified wooden yacht in Indonesia.

Dunia Baru is one of a kind. Whether you are a connoisseur of phinisis or new to the world of wooden yachts, the level of craftsmanship will stop you in your tracks. Every surface has been shaped by hand: carved teak panels, ironwood joinery, original Indonesian artwork in each cabin. She is as much a work of art as she is a yacht.

The build took seven years. The ironwood hull was handcrafted by master Konjo boat builders in Kalimantan, about a twelve-hour drive from the nearest airport. The vision from the start was singular: to create the finest yacht ever built in Indonesia. Naval architect Michael Kasten, who designed her hull, has said it is unlikely there will ever be a locally built timber phinisi to surpass her.

At fifty-one meters, Dunia Baru is among the largest traditional sailing yachts ever built in Indonesia, and the only wooden vessel in the country to achieve BKI classification, the equivalent of Lloyd's Register for steel ships. Her name means New World. The master shipwright who led her construction, Pak Haji Wahab, comes from five generations of Ara boat builders. He has built nearly sixty vessels. He says Dunia Baru was unique.

Under new ownership since 2022, Dunia Baru completed an extensive refit in 2020 and continues to receive ongoing investment. The current owners are dedicated to continually improving the platform: refreshed interiors, upgraded systems, Starlink connectivity, and ongoing maintenance that keeps her looking new. Every member of the crew stayed on through the transition. The guests notice.

She carries a licensed PADI Dive Center, three expedition tenders, two jet skis, kayaks, paddleboards, and full diving and snorkeling equipment for fourteen guests. Her shallow draft reaches anchorages that larger vessels cannot access. When conditions allow, the captain hoists the bark-colored sails and brings Indonesian sailing traditions back to life. It is a beautiful sight.

The Experience

A Day Aboard Dunia Baru

The open family-style galley, with a center island and teppanyaki grill, is unlike anything on other yachts. It was designed to bring guests together at meal times, to share stories of the day and plan the next one. The chef handles fragrant Indonesian dishes and Western cuisine with equal confidence. Guests dine at the artfully crafted salon table, around the teppanyaki grill, or outside under the stars on the aft deck.

After dark, attention shifts to the deck. The carefully planned lighting and miles of LED strips along the hull bring out each carved detail of the joinery. Nine subwoofers run on the integrated Sonos platform throughout the yacht, scaled for evenings on deck or quieter listening in the saloon. The engineering systems are built to a standard that matches the rest of the boat: this is a yacht where ambient comfort holds across all fourteen guests, all eighteen crew, and any kind of weather Indonesia produces.
