An Alila Resort, Hand-Built in Bira

Alila Purnama is a 46-meter phinisi built by hand in the village of Bira, South Sulawesi, in the traditional Bugis style and finished to the standards of the Alila Hotels brand (now part of Hyatt). The name means full moon in Bahasa Indonesia. Launched in 2012, she carries the Alila design language familiar from the brand's land properties: contemporary Indonesian craft, responsibly sourced teak and rattan, custom furniture made for this vessel alone.

The 10-meter beam gives the interior a presence rare on phinisi of this length. Three decks (Nav, Main, and Lower) house five suites for up to 10 guests, served by a crew of 16. The Majapahit Lounge runs 44 square meters across the main deck, with a 9-square-meter library and 95 square meters of outdoor lounge wrapping around it. Forward on the same deck, the dining table seats ten beneath canvas umbrellas, with oversized daybeds for sundowners and quiet hours.

Alila Purnama operates a fully licensed PADI dive center across all four cruising regions, and a resident spa therapist is aboard for every charter, working on board or on a private beach when conditions allow. Cruising speed is 8 knots, and the 4-meter draft gives access to inner reefs and lagoons that deeper-keeled vessels cannot reach: the protected bays around Misool in southern Raja Ampat, the fringing reefs of Cenderawasih where whale sharks gather year-round, the volcanic anchorages of the Banda Sea once the trades turn.

The Experience

A Day Aboard Alila Purnama

Morning light arrives through the wraparound windows of the master suite as the crew brings coffee before the anchor is raised. Dive guests are briefed on the way to the site; the tender marks the entry point. The team runs two dives before breakfast, returning in time for fruit and warm pastries on the main deck and the smell of teak warming in the sun. For those who stay aboard, yoga mats appear on the bow and the spa therapist sets up in the shade.

Afternoons bend to preference. Kayaks find mangrove channels too shallow for the tenders. A snorkel guide takes non-divers to walls of soft coral in two meters of water. The spa runs back-to-back sessions until sundowners, when the kitchen sends up small plates and the crew dims the lights on the main deck. Dinner is set under open sky, Indonesian islands on three sides, the chef explaining what came in from the morning market in the last port of call.

Accommodation

Five Suites, Five Indonesian Names

The Sriwijaya master suite occupies the Nav Deck at 25.6 square meters and takes the full beam of the vessel. Wraparound windows on three sides give 180-degree views, with a private balcony forward and a bathtub placed to face the sea. The ensuite includes shower, two washbasins, and a separately enclosed toilet. A private sundeck with daybed and deckchairs sits above, reserved for the master.

Below, four deluxe suites carry the names of Indonesian kingdoms and islands: Cirebon and Madura at 17.9 square meters each, Bali and Jawa at 16.8 square meters each. Each is fully air-conditioned with a queen bed (two convertible to twins), ensuite bathroom with shower, separate toilet, double wardrobe, and writing desk. Furniture and finishes are custom-made for this vessel, in the teak and rattan palette that defines her interior.

"

We chartered the boat with a group of friends about a year ago and honestly we have only great things to say. Amazing service, outstanding food, stunning water adventures, and incredible comfort. The Alila Purnama is just the way you present it. I sure recommend it on behalf of 8 other divers.

Limited Suite Charters

Book a Single Cabin

Alila Purnama runs several itineraries each year on which individual cabins, rather than the entire vessel, are available for booking. Suite charters suit individuals, couples, or smaller parties who want the amenities of a larger ship without the full private charter, alongside the chance to share the experience with other travelers. Scheduling is limited and changes seasonally, typically in Raja Ampat, Komodo, and occasionally on special itineraries between islands in the further reaches of the archipelago. Questions

Alila Purnama FAQ

How much does it cost to charter Alila Purnama?

Charter rates start at $110,000 per week for the entire vessel, or $15,700 per night, plus 12% Indonesian VAT. The same rate applies in 2026 and 2027. Rates apply across all four cruising regions. Minimum charter durations are five nights in Raja Ampat and four nights in Komodo. Suite charter departures, where individual cabins can be booked rather than the whole boat, are available on a limited number of itineraries each year.

How many guests can Alila Purnama accommodate?

Up to 10 guests across 5 suites. The Sriwijaya master suite on the Nav Deck has wraparound windows, 180-degree views, a private balcony, and a bathtub. Four deluxe suites on the Lower Deck (Cirebon, Madura, Bali, and Jawa) each have a queen bed (two convertible to twins), ensuite bathroom with shower, separate toilet, double wardrobe, and writing desk. All suites are air-conditioned with custom teak and rattan finishes.

Is Alila Purnama suitable for diving?

Yes. Alila Purnama runs a fully licensed PADI dive center catering to all levels, with over sixteen specialty courses including Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep, Drift, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Underwater Naturalist, and Night Diving. Equipment is provided for every guest, with a dedicated freshwater rinse tank for camera gear. Two 4.9-meter fiberglass tenders serve the dive program, and the dive team configures each day around guest experience and conditions.

Where does Alila Purnama cruise?

Alila Purnama follows Indonesia's seasonal weather windows. She positions in Raja Ampat from November through April when seas are calm and visibility peaks; in Komodo National Park from June through September during the dry season for trekking and the fast-current dive sites; in Cenderawasih Bay during March and May for whale sharks and WWII wreck dives; and in the Spice Islands and the Banda Sea during June and October for the historical nutmeg islands and remote diving.
