The Yacht

A former British Naval Explorer, reborn for Indonesia's remotest waters

Aqua Blu was commissioned in 1968 as a British Naval Explorer. She later served as the private yacht of an aristocratic European family before Aqua Expeditions acquired her, refitted her hull in 2006, and relaunched her as Aqua Blu in 2019. She is the only imported expedition superyacht of her kind operating in Indonesian waters, with the range, stability, and capacity to reach destinations other vessels simply cannot.

At 60 meters long with a beam of 11.4 meters and a draft of 4.2 meters, Aqua Blu was built to move. Her steel hull was designed for sustained open-ocean passages. She carries the highest international classifications in safety, including RINA classification, SOLAS and ISM compliance, and Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers that hold her steady in open-water crossings.

Her 15 ocean-facing suites, refreshed in 2024, range from 14 to 34 square meters. Each features an en-suite bathroom with rainfall shower, plush carpets, neutral palettes, and organic amenities. The interior is closer to a design hotel than a boatyard aesthetic. The stately dining room seats guests at separate tables. The Sky Lounge Bar on the top deck, the alfresco dining on the Forecastle Deck, and the Sun Deck with 360-degree views and wrap-around sofas create distinct settings for every part of the day. A Jacuzzi, spa, and outdoor exercise area round out what amounts to a resort that travels at 10 knots.

What sets Aqua Blu apart is scale combined with reach. She carries five tenders: two large excursion skiffs that handle up to sixteen guests each, a dedicated dive tender, and two utility RIBs. Complete dive equipment is on board for guests of all certifications. Her range and speed mean she can cover Komodo, the Banda Sea, the Spice Islands, and Raja Ampat on itineraries other charter vessels cannot match in a standard week.

The Experience

A Day Aboard Aqua Blu

Mornings aboard Aqua Blu start at the dive platform, where the first briefing happens as the sun rises over the water and the scent of reef mixes with salt air. The two excursion skiffs are already in the water. One heads toward the dive site, the other toward a beach that only shows up on the captain's personal charts. The remaining guests take breakfast on the Forecastle Deck, where coffee arrives before anyone has to ask.

Afternoons shift pace. The Sun Deck fills with guests who have just returned from snorkeling or kayaking. The spa books quickly: a Balinese massage therapist works through the afternoon. At 10 knots, Aqua Blu moves between anchorages with efficiency, arriving at the evening's position in time for drinks in the Sky Lounge before the kitchen sends out dinner. With thirty crew for thirty guests, the ratio holds at a level where attention never slackens and nothing is rushed.

Technical Specifications

International Safety Classification

Aqua Blu holds the highest international classifications in safety and is equipped with Quantum Zero Speed stabilizers for optimal comfort across open-water passages. Her steel construction, built to naval specifications, and her 2024 refurbishment mean she meets stringent standards for extended ocean voyaging in remote waters across the Indonesian archipelago.

Accommodation

Fifteen Private Sanctuaries

Aqua Blu's 15 suites range from 14 to 34 square meters across four decks. The vessel was originally fitted out under Dutch yacht designer Cor D. Rover during her 2006 conversion; her current interiors were refreshed in 2024 by Birgit Galli Zugaro. Plush carpets, neutral tones, and organic bath amenities define the rooms, while overhead rainfall showers in every en-suite bathroom reflect the quality of finishing throughout the vessel. The largest suites feel more akin to boutique hotel rooms than anything built for a hull. Whether guests book a double or twin configuration, they find the same quiet attention to detail: well-calibrated reading lights, climate control that responds without fuss, and sightlines through portholes to whichever island happens to be passing.
