The Journey

Into Indonesia's Largest Marine National Park

Journey to a vast, marine-rich region largely ignored by the modern world. During this 7-night exploration of Indonesia's largest marine national park, you will immerse yourself in an area that claims over 500 coral species and nearly 1,000 fish species, including the largest one: the whale shark.

Cenderawasih Bay National Park remains a wild, isolated outpost with an extensive coral reef that ranks among the finest in the world. First-hand encounters with whale sharks are the centerpiece of this voyage, alongside dives into reefs teeming with fish. For adventurers wanting to immerse in a natural wonderland far from the tourist trail, the itinerary also includes inland excursions to local villages and water sports in the calm bays of West Papua's remote wilderness.

Cenderawasih's whale sharks are the only non-migratory population we know of, drawn to baitfish in fishermen's nets at Kwatisore. Encounters can run for hours. Few other charters reach this far east in a season.

Your Charter Team

Guided by Those Who Know These Waters

Cenderawasih Bay is one of the few places whale sharks gather year-round, which means the trip turns less on luck than on timing and patience. We will tell you honestly when in the year your group has the best of it, and pair the itinerary with a yacht that has the range for somewhere this remote. Tell us when you would like to travel, and we will be straight with you about what to expect.

Swimming with the whale sharks in Cenderawasih was unlike anything I have experienced. They circled for hours. We lost count of how many times we went back in.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to go?

Whale shark encounters are possible year-round in Cenderawasih Bay, as the population here is non-migratory. The calmest seas and clearest visibility fall between May and October. That said, we have run successful charters in every month of the year.

Are whale shark sightings guaranteed?

Cenderawasih Bay has one of the most reliable whale shark populations on earth, thanks to the long-standing relationship between the sharks and the local fishermen's platforms. While no wildlife encounter can ever be guaranteed, the probability here is exceptionally high, particularly at Kwatisore.

What diving experience do I need?

Certified divers will enjoy the walls and reef systems throughout the bay. Most whale shark encounters are by snorkel, in calm, shallow water, so non-divers and first-timers have equally extraordinary access to the main event. Discovery Dives with instruction are also available on board.

How do we get there?

Fly from Bali (DPS) or Jakarta (CGK) to Manokwari (MKW) in West Papua, where the yacht will be waiting. Connections typically route through Sorong or Makassar. Our team handles all logistics briefings and can assist with flight planning as part of the charter preparation.
