The Yacht

A 2023 phinisi built in Bulukumba, refined for culture and cuisine.

Celestia launched in 2023, the latest vessel to emerge from the legendary boatbuilding village of Bulukumba in South Sulawesi, where Konjo craftsmen have shaped timber into sea-going vessels for centuries. That heritage, recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural tradition, is visible in every joint, plank, and fitting. What distinguishes Celestia from the yachts that came before her is the brief the owners gave: build something worthy of the tradition, then make it entirely new.

At 45m and 147.6 feet, her hull is locally sourced ironwood, her decks teak. The double-masted schooner rig, evoking the ancient trading vessels that carried spices from these very islands to Europe, is functional rather than decorative. Celestia sails. The bowsprit lounge, balanced over the water on the forward spar, makes that clear the moment guests step aboard. Under the right conditions, with the mainsail drawing and the islands sliding past, the silence and the sensation are unlike anything a motor yacht can offer.

Her interiors were designed by Capetown-based Deirdre Renniers, who sourced furnishings from Balinese artisans to create something that reads as genuinely Indonesian rather than generically tropical. Warm teak panelling, hand-woven textiles, brass hardware, and the particular quality of light through wooden-framed windows give each space an earned character. The 39-square-meter Master Stateroom on the main deck has panoramic windows on three sides, a private terrace, and a bathroom that would be at home in a serious land-based hotel.

The culinary program is led by Executive Chef Wayan Kresna Yasa, Michelin-trained and previously at Home restaurant in Bali. Guests eat well on Celestia. Snacks arrive unsolicited between dives. Beach dinners are set up on uninhabited shores with the same care as the indoor dining room. Hot chocolate appears after night dives without being asked. The 17-member crew maintains a 1.2:1 guest-to-crew ratio, which shows.

Celestia sails the Coral Triangle: Raja Ampat from October through April, Komodo National Park from May through October, and the Banda Sea on select crossings. Her Yanmar Marine Diesel engine delivers up to 10 knots when wind fails, while the water maker produces 10,000 liters daily, supporting extended passages between the archipelago's most remote anchorages. Nitrox is available, the dive locker is purpose-built, and two speedboats extend the range for those who want to explore shallow reefs and river mouths that the mother vessel cannot reach.

The Experience

A Day Aboard Celestia

The day begins before the sun clears the ridge. Serious divers are in the water at first light, before the day-trippers arrive at the reef. Back on deck, the smell of coffee and fresh bread drifts from the galley. Breakfast is unhurried. The crew has already re-rigged the snorkeling gear and charged the speedboat tenders for the morning's second act. The teak deck catches the light at a low angle, and the air still holds some of the night's chill. Someone is already on the bowsprit lounge with a book.

By afternoon, the pace shifts again. A massage on deck. Kayaks deployed into a lagoon that the speedboats can reach but the mother vessel cannot. The chef is in the galley preparing whatever arrived from the morning's fish market, or staging a beach dinner on a strip of sand nobody else knows about. Evenings gather around the deck table, appetizers at sunset, the cook's multi-course menu timed to the fading light. The 17-member crew anticipates requests rather than waiting for them. 14 guests. Plenty of space. No schedule that cannot be changed.

UNESCO Heritage Craft

Celestia is built in the tradition of the Sulawesi phinisi, whose construction methods were inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. The Bulukumba boatbuilders who constructed her represent the ninth generation of a lineage that has built vessels for regional trade routes since the 14th century.

Accommodation

Seven Staterooms Across Three Decks

The Master Stateroom on the main deck is the reference point for everything else Celestia offers. At 39 square meters, with panoramic windows on three sides and a private terrace opening onto the water, it functions more like a hotel suite than a yacht cabin. The bed is king-size, the bathroom has gold fixtures, slate tile, and a walk-in shower. Morning light enters from every angle. The Captain of the charter group tends to claim it.

The two Owner's Staterooms on the upper deck each offer 30 square meters and their own private terraces, positioned to catch both the sunrise and the evening sky. Below, four Deluxe Staterooms on the lower deck trade square footage for intimacy: warm teak paneling, porthole windows bringing in filtered ocean light, en-suite bathrooms with oval mirrors and brass hardware. Two rooms are configured as queens, two as twins. All seven staterooms have air conditioning, individual climate control, USB charging, and en-suite bathrooms.

The Team

Meet the Crew

A 1:1.2 guest-to-crew ratio makes itself felt in small ways: the coffee that arrives before you ask for it, the dive gear already configured for your settings, the itinerary adjusted overnight because the captain found a better anchorage. Jennifer, Celestia's cruise director, handles every detail before it becomes a question.
