How to Get to Raja Ampat
Flight routes, connections, and arrival logistics
Raja Ampat is remote by design, and getting there requires planning. Here is exactly how to reach Sorong, what to expect at each step, and how we smooth the logistics.
The Route Overview
Raja Ampat has no international airport. All access flows through Sorong (SOQ), a port city on the western tip of the Bird's Head Peninsula in West Papua. Sorong is the gateway, and your yacht will be waiting in or near its harbor.
The typical routing from overseas:
Plan for a full travel day, and in most cases an overnight stop in Jakarta or Makassar. This is not a hardship; it is the natural filter that keeps Raja Ampat hard to reach and lightly traveled. The journey itself shifts your pace from the speed of airports to the rhythm of the sea.

Every route into Raja Ampat funnels through Sorong, on the western tip of the Bird's Head Peninsula.
Getting to Sorong
From Jakarta (Most Common)
Garuda Indonesia and Lion Air operate daily direct flights from Jakarta (CGK) to Sorong (SOQ). Flight time is approximately 4 hours. Morning departures, typically 06:00 to 08:00, arrive in Sorong by late morning local time, allowing same-day embarkation.
This is the most reliable route with the most flight options. If connecting from an international arrival into Jakarta, an overnight in the city is almost always necessary to catch the early morning Sorong flight.
From Makassar (Alternative)
Wings Air and Lion Air fly from Makassar (UPG) to Sorong, approximately 3 hours. Makassar can serve as an alternative transit point, especially for travelers coming from eastern Indonesia or connecting through Bali via Makassar.
From Bali (Via Connection)
There are no direct flights from Bali (DPS) to Sorong. The standard routing is Bali → Jakarta (evening flight, 2 hours) → overnight in Jakarta → Jakarta → Sorong (morning flight, 4 hours). Some routings go Bali → Makassar → Sorong, though this can involve longer layovers.
From Ambon (For Extended Itineraries)
Charters ending in Ambon (common for Spice Islands or cross-archipelago voyages) connect to Sorong via a 2.5-hour flight on Garuda or Sriwijaya, with onward connections to Jakarta or Bali.
We book domestic flights for our charter guests and provide a step-by-step travel brief with flight numbers, transfer instructions, and emergency contact details. You will not be navigating Indonesian airports alone.
The Overnight Connection
For most international travelers, an overnight in Jakarta is part of the journey. This is not wasted time; it serves as a buffer against international flight delays and ensures you are rested for the early morning departure to Sorong.
Jakarta Airport Hotels
Several hotels are connected to or adjacent to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK). These are transit stops, not destinations. Check in, rest, and catch your morning flight. We can arrange the booking.
- Jakarta Airport Hotel: inside Terminal 2, walkable from the gates
- Ibis Styles: connected via SkyTrain
- Four Seasons Jakarta: within an hour of the airport, worth considering for longer layovers
Alternative: Overnight in Makassar
For travelers routing through Makassar, Aryaduta Makassar and Four Points by Sheraton are both near the airport with easy morning transfers.

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK): well-connected transit hotels make the overnight comfortable.
Arriving in Sorong
At the Airport
Sorong's Domine Eduard Osok Airport (SOQ) is small and straightforward. Baggage claim is a single belt. Immigration is domestic, so there are no customs checks. Exit the terminal and your yacht's representative will be waiting with a sign.
Transfer to the Yacht
The transfer from Sorong airport to the yacht takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the yacht's mooring location. Options include:
Direct harbor transfer: A short drive to Sorong's main harbor, where a tender takes you to the yacht anchored in the bay.
Speedboat pickup: Some yachts position at a private jetty near the airport. The speedboat ride to the yacht's anchorage takes 20 to 45 minutes, and your Raja Ampat adventure begins immediately.
Waisai transfer: If the yacht is positioned further into Raja Ampat (near Waisai, the regional capital), a 2-hour fast ferry or a chartered speedboat brings you from Sorong to the yacht's location. This is less common but used for some itineraries.

Your yacht's tender meets you at the harbor, the moment the itinerary truly begins.
Raja Ampat Marine Park Permit
All visitors to Raja Ampat waters require a Marine Park Entry Permit (locally called the "PIN"). On private charters with Indo Yachts, this is included in your charter costs and handled entirely by our team. You do not need to arrange or pay for this separately. The permit funds support local conservation and community programs across the Raja Ampat marine protected area.
The permit is included and arranged ahead of arrival. Nothing to pay, and no queue to clear. We handle it so you board the yacht and go.
Private Aviation
For guests who prefer to bypass the commercial routing, private charter flights offer a direct connection.
Charter Flights to Sorong
Private charter aircraft can fly from Bali or Jakarta directly to Sorong, reducing the journey to 4 to 5 hours with no connections or overnight stops. Aircraft types range from turboprops (King Air, Pilatus PC-12) to light jets depending on group size.
Private aviation costs in Indonesia vary significantly based on aircraft availability, routing, and group size. Contact us for a quote tailored to your specific charter dates and group.
Helicopter Transfers (Limited)
Helicopter access within Raja Ampat is extremely limited due to fuel logistics and the distances involved. For transfers between Sorong and nearby anchorages, helicopter charter is theoretically possible but rarely practical. We can explore options for specific requests.

A private charter flight collapses the journey to a single hop, with no connections and no overnight.
Private aviation makes the most sense for large groups where the per-person cost becomes competitive with business class commercial tickets plus overnight hotels. We can run the comparison for your group and advise accordingly.
Practical Details
Time Zone
Sorong and Raja Ampat operate on Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT), UTC+9. This is one hour ahead of Bali and Makassar, and two hours ahead of Jakarta. Account for this when planning connections.
Luggage
Domestic flights to Sorong on Garuda typically allow 30kg checked baggage per person. Lion Air and Wings Air may have lower allowances (20kg). If traveling with dive gear, extra camera equipment, or surfboards, check baggage policies in advance or arrange excess baggage. Soft bags are strongly recommended over hard suitcases for yacht storage.
Travel Insurance
We require all charter guests to carry travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage. Sorong has a basic hospital, but the nearest comprehensive medical facility is in Makassar or Jakarta. DAN membership is recommended for divers. Evacuation insurance (Ripcord or similar) provides helicopter or medevac coverage for remote areas.
SIM Cards and Connectivity
Indonesian SIM cards (Telkomsel recommended) can be arranged in advance. Coverage in Raja Ampat is limited: signal is available near villages and some anchorages but absent in open water and remote areas. Most yachts carry satellite WiFi with modest speeds.
What to Arrange in Advance
- Domestic flights: we book these for you
- Transit hotel if overnighting in Jakarta or Makassar
- Travel and dive insurance
- Visa on Arrival: available at Indonesian international airports for most nationalities, approximately $35

The journey ends here, anchored in waters that justify every connection and every overnight stop.
