Ultimate Guide to Komodo Dragons
Arrival options through Labuan Bajo
Komodo National Park is one of Indonesia's most accessible charter destinations, reached by a single flight from Bali. This guide covers how to get to Labuan Bajo, what to expect on arrival, and the logistics of one-way and round-trip itineraries.
The Route Overview
Komodo National Park is accessed through Labuan Bajo (LBJ), a small but growing town on the western tip of Flores. Unlike Raja Ampat, reaching Komodo is straightforward: a single domestic flight from Bali, with no overnights required.
Most guests fly into Bali, spend a night or two enjoying the island, then take a morning flight to Labuan Bajo and embark the same day. The yacht can be ready for you by lunchtime.

Komodo charters begin in Labuan Bajo, a single flight from Bali.
Flying to Labuan Bajo
From Bali (Most Common)
Multiple daily flights operate between Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) and Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo (LBJ). Flight time is approximately 90 minutes. Morning flights departing Bali between 07:00 and 09:00 land in Labuan Bajo by mid-morning, giving you the full first afternoon on the yacht.
Airlines serving this route:
- Garuda Indonesia: most reliable, best baggage allowance at 30kg
- Lion Air: frequent departures, lower fares
- Wings Air: turboprop, fewer amenities but more frequent schedules
- Citilink: Garuda's low-cost subsidiary
From Jakarta
Garuda and Lion Air operate direct flights from Jakarta (CGK) to Labuan Bajo, approximately 2.5 hours. This works well for travelers connecting directly from international arrivals into Jakarta without routing through Bali.
From Other Domestic Cities
Connections exist through Makassar (UPG), Surabaya (SUB), and Ende (ENE), though these are less common for charter guests. We route through Bali or Jakarta for simplicity unless your travel plans suggest otherwise.
Book the earliest morning flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo. This maximizes your first day on the yacht and gives a buffer against delays. If your international flight arrives in Bali the evening before, one night at a Bali hotel near the airport, or a few days exploring the island, sets you up perfectly.

Arriving at LBJ
Komodo Airport
Labuan Bajo's Komodo Airport is small, modern, and efficient. It was expanded in recent years to handle increased tourism. The terminal has a single baggage carousel, a few shops, and an ATM. Walk out the arrivals door and your yacht's driver or our transfer coordinator will be waiting. The drive to the harbor takes 10 minutes through town.
Transfer to the Yacht
From the harbor, a tender takes you to the yacht, which is typically anchored in Labuan Bajo's bay or moored at the commercial dock. The tender ride is 5 to 10 minutes. Your luggage goes directly from the car to the tender to your cabin.
Within an hour of landing, you are on board, drink in hand, as the crew prepares for departure. Most yachts raise anchor by early afternoon, heading directly into Komodo National Park. The first anchorage is typically reached before sunset.

Labuan Bajo's harbor: a short tender ride separates the airport from your first anchorage in the park.
Labuan Bajo Town
If you arrive early or want to explore before boarding, Labuan Bajo offers a handful of good restaurants, a fresh fish market, and a waterfront that keeps expanding. It still has the relaxed feel of a fishing village. We can recommend restaurants and a hotel for an overnight stay if your schedule allows.
One-Way Charter Logistics
Many popular itineraries are one-way: departing Bali and ending in Labuan Bajo, or vice versa. These routes maximize time in the water by eliminating the need to retrace the same passage.
Bali to Komodo
Board in Bali's Serangan or Benoa harbor. Sail east through the Lombok Strait, past Sumbawa and Sangeang, into Komodo National Park over 7 to 10 nights. Disembark in Labuan Bajo.
Labuan Bajo Loop
Fly in and out of the same airport. The Extreme Komodo (5 nights) and Starter Charter (3 nights) operate as loops through the park's highlights.

One-way routes sail east from Bali, gaining a day or two on the water by not doubling back.
One-way itineraries are almost always better value for time on the water. The cost of a one-way domestic flight (typically $50 to $150) is trivial compared to the extra day or two of sailing you gain by not doubling back. We handle all the flight bookings for your return.

Practical Details
Time Zone
Labuan Bajo operates on Central Indonesia Time (WITA), UTC+8. This is the same as Bali and Makassar, and one hour ahead of Jakarta. No time zone adjustment is needed when flying directly from Bali.
Luggage
Garuda allows 30kg checked baggage on the Bali to Labuan Bajo route. Lion Air and Wings Air may limit checked bags to 20kg. Dive gear, surfboards, and camera equipment can push you over; check policies or book excess baggage in advance. Soft bags are preferred over hard suitcases for yacht storage.
Komodo National Park Fees
All visitors to Komodo National Park pay entry fees, and the fee structure has changed several times in recent years. On private charters with Indo Yachts, all marine park fees are included in your charter costs and handled by our team. You do not need to arrange or pay for these separately. We provide current fee information with your charter proposal for full transparency.
Pre-Charter Stays
In Labuan Bajo: If arriving the day before your charter or wanting to explore the town, Ayana Komodo Waecicu Beach and Plataran Komodo are our recommended properties. Both offer waterfront settings with views across the harbor to the islands beyond.
In Bali: Many guests spend one to three nights in Bali before flying to Labuan Bajo, using the time as a jet-lag buffer and an opportunity to explore the island. We work with the leading properties on the island: Amankila for east Bali serenity, Alila Seminyak for the social scene, or Four Seasons Jimbaran for families. We can arrange hotels, transfers, and a Bali itinerary as part of your charter planning.
What to Arrange in Advance
- Domestic flight Bali to Labuan Bajo: we book this for you
- Return flight if doing a one-way charter
- Pre-charter hotel in Bali: optional but recommended
- Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage
- Visa on Arrival at Bali's international airport: approximately $35 for most nationalities

By the time the sun sets on your first day, the park is already yours to explore.
