Chartering with Children

Tips for multi-generational family charters

Family charters are some of our favorite trips to plan. Children as young as toddlers thrive on board when the yacht, itinerary, and crew are well matched. Here is what we have learned from years of family charters.

Why It Works

A yacht charter is one of the few holidays where three generations can genuinely enjoy the same trip. Grandparents relax on deck while parents dive. Teenagers paddleboard while younger children build sandcastles on a beach the crew has prepared. Everyone comes together for meals, sunsets, and the shared experience of waking up in a different bay each morning.

The crew is the key. Indonesian charter crews are experienced with families and take genuine delight in children. Within hours of boarding, the crew knows each child's name, their favorite snack, and what makes them laugh. The chef prepares kid-friendly meals alongside the adult menu. The deckhands teach children to fish, to spot dolphins, and to jump off the upper deck.

There is no other type of holiday where your children have this combination of freedom, nature, adventure, and attentive care, all within the safe confines of a private vessel with a professional crew.

Choosing the Right Yacht

Not every yacht is equally suited to families. The right vessel depends on the ages of your children and the size of your group.

Key Considerations

Deck spaceChildren need room to move. Yachts with spacious upper decks, multiple outdoor areas, and wide swim platforms work best. Cramped deck layouts lead to restless kids.

Cabin layoutFamilies with young children often want interconnecting cabins or cabins on the same level. Some yachts offer triple or quad configurations. A master suite for parents with a smaller cabin next door for children is the most requested layout.

Swim platform and water accessA low, flat swim platform with easy ladder access makes getting in and out of the water straightforward for children of all ages. Some yachts have enclosed or gated swim areas.

Water toysKayaks, paddleboards, snorkeling gear in child sizes, fishing equipment, and a tender large enough for the whole family to go on excursions together. Some yachts carry inflatables, tubes, and wakeboards.

Crew experienceAsk whether the crew has experience with children. Most do, but some crews are better suited to adult-focused charters. We match family groups with crews known for their warmth with young guests.

Our Recommendations

We regularly recommend Rascal, Rebel, Dunia Baru, and Celestia for family charters. Each offers generous space, family-friendly cabin configurations, experienced crews, and a wide range of water toys and activities. We can advise on the best match for your specific group.

A low, flat swim platform is the single feature that matters most for families with young children.

PRO TIP

For multi-generational trips (grandparents, parents, and children), consider a larger yacht even if you do not fill every cabin. The extra common space reduces friction and gives each generation room to enjoy the charter at their own pace.

Best Destinations for Families

Komodo (April through October)

The best all-around family destination. Easy access from Bali (90-minute flight to Labuan Bajo, LBJ). A compelling mix of activities that captivate all ages: Komodo dragon encounters on Rinca, snorkeling with manta rays at Makassar Reef, hiking to Padar's viewpoint, beach BBQs on pink sand, water sports in sheltered bays. The "To the Land of Dragons" itinerary is our most popular family charter for good reason.

Passages between sites are short (1 to 3 hours), so children are never stuck on the yacht for long stretches without activity. The scenery changes constantly: volcanic hills, turquoise bays, white and pink beaches, flying fox colonies at sunset.

Raja Ampat (October through April)

More remote and more focused on the water, but equally rewarding for families. Children love snorkeling Raja Ampat's shallow reefs where the fish are dense, colorful, and unafraid. Kayaking through karst lagoons, visiting Arborek village, and spotting baby blacktip reef sharks in the Wayag shallows are highlights.

The access logistics are slightly more involved (overnight connection via Jakarta to Sorong, SOQ), which makes Komodo the better first-time choice for most families. Raja Ampat is ideal for the second charter, when the family knows what to expect and is ready for a more immersive nature experience.

Shorter Options

The "Starter Charter" (3 nights in Komodo) works well for families testing the concept. The "Westward Passage" (7 nights, Komodo to Bali) is another strong family option, combining park highlights with a return to Bali by sea.

Short passages between sites keep children engaged: Komodo is the usual first family charter.

Activities by Age

Babies and toddlers, under 6

At this age, the yacht itself is the adventure. Splashing from the swim platform, watching fish from the deck, beach time with the crew, and simple snorkeling in knee-deep water over a sandy reef. Children as young as 3 or 4 can snorkel with a properly fitted mask and a flotation vest, though attention spans are short.

The crew becomes an extended family. Deckhands carry toddlers on their shoulders during beach excursions. The chef makes familiar foods alongside the adult menu. Nap time happens naturally in the air-conditioned cabin after a morning in the water.

Children, 6 to 11

The sweet spot for family charters. Children this age are old enough to snorkel independently (with supervision), try Discover Scuba diving on some yachts, fish, kayak, paddleboard, and hike. They are endlessly curious about marine life and will spend hours watching fish from the swim platform.

Komodo dragons are the highlight for this age group. The guided walk on Rinca is safe, well-managed, and genuinely thrilling for children who have grown up watching nature documentaries. The rangers are experienced with young visitors.

Teenagers, 12 to 17

Teenagers thrive on yacht charters more than parents expect. The combination of water sports (wakeboarding, cliff jumping, paddleboard races), diving certification (available from age 10 for Junior Open Water), photography (underwater cameras and drones), and the sheer novelty of sleeping on a yacht in a different bay each night keeps them engaged.

The limited WiFi, which parents worry will cause complaints, typically produces the opposite: teenagers rediscover the pleasure of being present, of actually looking at what is around them, and of spending time with their family without screens competing for attention.

Safety & Practical Considerations

On the Yacht

  • All yachts carry life jackets in adult and child sizes
  • Crew members are trained in first aid and emergency procedures
  • The yacht carries a comprehensive first aid kit and an emergency oxygen kit (on dive-equipped vessels)
  • Railings and gates are standard on all charter yachts; crew can install additional netting for toddlers on request
  • Tender boats always carry safety equipment and a crew member

In the Water

  • Flotation vests available for children of all ages
  • Crew or dive guides accompany every snorkeling and swimming session
  • Site selection is adjusted for families: calm conditions, shallow water, no current
  • Children are never left unsupervised in or near the water

Medical

The nearest hospital to Komodo is in Labuan Bajo (basic facilities). The nearest hospital to Raja Ampat is in Sorong (basic). For serious medical emergencies, evacuation to Bali or Jakarta is required. Travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage is essential for family charters. DAN membership is recommended for any family members who will dive.

Bring any prescription medications your children require in sufficient quantity for the full charter. Motion sickness medication for children who are prone should be discussed with your pediatrician before the trip.

What Parents Should Know

The Crew Will Win Your Children Over

This happens on every family charter. By day two, your children will have favorite crew members. By day three, they will be helping the deckhands coil ropes and asking the chef for seconds. By the last day, the goodbyes are the hardest part. Indonesian crews have a natural, unhurried warmth with children that is difficult to describe but impossible to miss.

Flexibility Is Built In

A child has a meltdown at 09:00 and the morning dive plan falls apart? No problem. The crew adjusts. The divers go with the tender while the rest of the family stays on the yacht or goes to the beach. There is no schedule to adhere to, no group to hold up, no tour bus to catch. This flexibility is the single biggest advantage of a private charter for families.

The Charter Gets Better Each Day

Day one is excitement and adjustment. Day two, the family finds its rhythm. By day three, everyone is in the flow: waking naturally, eating when hungry, diving or snorkeling or resting based on energy and conditions. The best family moments tend to happen in the second half of the charter, when everyone has relaxed enough to be fully present.

They Will Want to Come Back

The most common outcome of a family charter is a repeat booking. Children who charter in Komodo ask to go to Raja Ampat. Teenagers who snorkeled want to learn to dive. Grandparents who were skeptical become the strongest advocates for doing it again. We hear this from families every season, and it remains one of the most satisfying parts of what we do.

By day three the children are helping the deckhands; by the last day the goodbyes are the hard part.

PRO TIP

Book the same yacht and crew for your second charter if they are available. Children form genuine bonds with crew members, and returning to a familiar vessel with familiar faces creates a sense of continuity that deepens the whole trip for everyone.
